Eric Carle was born June 25 1929 in Syracuse, New York to Johanna and Erich Carle, two German immigrants who later moved back to Germany in 1930, where Eric grew up and went to school. Erich Carle was taken prisoner to Russians for eight years. Carle started his writing career when Bill Martin Jr. came across a red lobster Carle created for an advertisement, and asked him to illustrate the now famous Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See which became a best-seller. Thus beginning of Carle’s writing career. Soon, Carle was writing and illustrating his own stories such as 1,2,3 to the Zoo, and The very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle has a son and a daughter and has been married twice. Carle and his wife, Bobbie Morrison founded the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art which is for children’s books in 2002. The Museum is attached to the Hampshire College Cultural Village. The museum has had over 325,000 visitors since it opened. Carle also received an honorary decorate from Bates College in 2007. Carle also drew 2 pictures for Google’s homepage in 2009. The Very HungryCaterpillar was chosen as the book for Jumpstart’s 2009 Read for record program. Eric Carle has had a very successful life, and many people are waiting anxiously for Carle’s next move, which I’m sure will be a great one!
